Venue acoustics explained simply

Acoustics describe how sound behaves once it leaves a speaker or instrument and interacts with a room's specific hard and soft surfaces, including walls, ceiling height and the genuine amount of soft material present, such as seating fabric or carpet, that absorbs sound rather than simply reflecting it back sharply.

Rooms with a lot of hard, flat, parallel surfaces tend to produce echo and a genuinely muddy overall sound, since reflected sound waves arrive at a listener's ear slightly delayed and layered messily over the original direct signal itself, blurring clarity considerably for anyone standing further from the source.

Good venues address this through a careful mix of room shape, strategic sound treatment and thoughtful speaker placement, rather than relying purely on raw volume to overcome a genuinely difficult room. Understanding this helps explain why some venues consistently sound noticeably better than others of a similar physical size. None of this requires specialist training to notice, only a genuinely attentive ear across a few different rooms.
