The rise of the outdoor concert

Outdoor concerts became practical at real scale once amplification technology could reliably project sound across open space to a large, dispersed crowd spread out over a wide area. Before this development, outdoor performances were limited largely to acoustic instruments and smaller audiences positioned close enough to hear without any electronic assistance whatsoever.
The appeal of an outdoor setting went well beyond simple capacity though, once the technology made it genuinely possible at scale. Open air venues allowed audiences far larger than any indoor hall could reasonably accommodate, while offering an atmosphere shaped by weather, daylight and open sky rather than the fixed, enclosing walls of a traditional theatre.
This shift also changed what a concert could actually be as an event in itself, opening the door to multi act lineups and full day programming that indoor venues, with their tighter turnover schedules, generally could not easily support. The outdoor concert format effectively made the modern festival possible in the first place.
