Early amplification allowed a single voice or instrument to reach a modestly larger room than acoustic performance alone could ever manage, but the real transformation came later, with systems powerful and reliable enough to fill genuinely large spaces, indoor or outdoor, with clear, even sound reaching every single listener present.
This growing capability reshaped what organisers could realistically plan for across very different kinds of venues. Spaces no longer needed to rely purely on natural acoustics or careful seating arrangements to ensure a decent listening experience, which opened up far more flexible options, including open outdoor fields, as genuine venues for large scale events.
As sound technology continued improving steadily over decades, audience expectations rose alongside it in step. People accustomed to clear, powerful sound at one event came to expect a similar standard elsewhere, which in turn pushed venues and organisers to keep investing in better equipment simply to remain genuinely competitive.
